Spreading Light and Love through PLAY!
Play Light Love
Backyard Project Update SUMMER 2016 - COMPLETED
S.H.A.R.E. is an elective established in 2016 where students from Lyford Cay International School came together to make a difference in the Bahamian community. The school elective focuses on students becoming a part of a community based program to provide assistance to the overall development of the broader Bahamas community. Students are given an opportunity to be involved in public relations, advocacy, fundraising, and lesson planning.
S.H.A.R.E. and Play Light Love
The backyard is almost completeD with a clean, safe, and bright new area! Fresh produce being grown, seating for 120 people, new showers for the homeless, a new safe gating area, and fresh hot healthy meals provided! This is just the beginning of many great things from Play Light Love and the S.H.A.R.E. group.
On Saturdays S.H.A.R.E. partner up with Goodfellow Farms to serve healthy, quality food while students involved in S.H.A.R.E. collaborate with the children providing education and fun in a safe, positive environment.
Future Play Light Love and S.H.A.R.E. projects at GCM
Computer Lab Development
GCM has a room with many computers that don't function. This room is for students to come after school and complete homework while also having the opportunity to use computers. Our hopes are to provide this room with functioning computers that also provide internet along with adequate work space and supplies for children.
Daily GCM feeds on average of 300 people (over 2000 meals a week). While operating in a cramped and insufficient kitchen, quality of food and work is becoming relevant. In the future, we plan to help renovate and expand the kitchen!
Great Commision Ministries (GCM)
GCM is a non-profit, non-government organization that offers food, shelter, clothing, orphanages, and drug rehabilitation programs for the poor while running classes and courses for the youth in economically depressed areas.
In Nassau, Bahamas GCM was founded in 1987 by Rev. Walter S. Hanchell and is currently managed by a board of directors. GCM has 32 full-time staff members and many volunteers who help in the daily operation.
Services at GCM include:
- Shelters for homeless men, women and children
- Distribution of grocery and clothing to the needy
- Feeding centers with hot meals
- Save the children club, for abused and neglected boys and girls ages 5-19
- Orphanages and hostels for street and fatherless children
- Drug rehabilitation for substance abusers
- After care program and crime reduction for ex-offenders
- Assistance for fire and disaster victims
- Leadership Training
The Back Yard Project
GCM has a backyard space that is currently unsafe and has been used as a storage/garbage area for many years. Our hopes have been to renovate this space into a fully functional lunch, play, and work area for all! This space will also eventually include a shower for the homeless.
